I was born and raised in Granite City, IL. My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Hungary between 1900 and 1920. My father John, after losing his job of 37 years as a foreman at General Steel Ind., took a job as a custodian. By mowing lawns, working during high school at Graham’s Book Store and during the summers between college and medical school at Granite City Steel, I paid my own way through college and graduated in three and one-half years from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana with High Honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. I paid my own way through medical school and graduated from the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine with Honors and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. I completed my Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and returned to the St. Louis area to complete my Cardiology training at Barnes Hospital. In 1983, Dr. Eve E. Slater and I co-authored Aortic Dissection, published by McGraw-Hill. I was in practice from 1982 until my retirement in 2005 with Missouri Cardiovascular Specialist in Columbia, Missouri.

I have received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and the Silver Beaver Award. I am past President of the Great Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America. I remain on the Board of the Council and I am also an Area Vice President. I am also past President of the Columbia Northwest Rotary, Advent Enterprises, and have served on the Board of the Columbia United Way. I currently serve on the Board of the Boone Hospital Center Foundation and the Columbia Civic Orchestra. I am President of the University of Chicago Medical and Biological Sciences Alumni Association and serve on the University-wide Alumni Board of Governors.

My family has established the Doroghazi Outstanding Clinical Teaching Award at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and the Doroghazi Eagle Scout Award in the Great Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America.
