A Rough Day in the Precious Metals

Issue #Interim Bulletin #136A, December 22, 2010

The precious metals have had a great year; they have been going almost straight up since August. As I pointed out multiple times, Silver Wheaton (SLW) and Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ) have been the stocks to watch; they led the market on the way up.
Nothing goes straight up, corrections occur in all bull markets. Note that December, 2009 was brutal for the precious metals. I am writing because these two stellar stocks are now under-performing, and had a rough day today (see chart of SLW, page 2, and GDXJ, page 3).
I do not know if the precious metals will now correct. However, the recent performance of these two bell-weathers concerns me and bears watching.
